20th Anniversary

Bolton U3A is 20 years old and to celebrtate we held an Anniversary Dinner on 5th December 2011 at Bolton Old Links Golf Club. Ken Higson the original Secretary gave a short address and after the dinner we had a Guest Speaker – David Mitchell, Chester Town Crier.

Adult Learners’ Week

Once again Bolton U3A took part in the Adult Learners’ Week by handing out leaflets in Victoria Square and holding a Coffee Morning and we are pleased to announce that we recruited a number of new members.

Bolton ‘Woman Of The Year’ Award

One of our newer members, Mrs Kath Tyldesley has been honoured with a special Bolton Woman Of The Year Award 2010, for services to older people primarily people suffering with dementia. This award was given to Kath by the Mayor of Bolton Councillor John Byrne.

After caring for her husband, Norman, until his death in 1999, Mrs Tyldesley, aged 82, set up Bolton’s own Dementia Support Group to provide support for people dealing with the condition.

Kath said: “I am thrilled to bits but I am going to carry on what I have been doing.

“There are 3,000 people in Bolton with dementia and our group’s motto is ‘We want people to remember those who forget’.”

Renewed congratulations to Mrs Betty Kay MBE

You will remember that last year we introduced you to one of our members, Mrs Betty Kay who was made an MBE which was presented to her at Buckingham Palace in May 2010 in recognition of her voluntary service to adult education after freely giving up her time to teach English for almost 20 years.

Now to add to her achievements the University of Bolton has awarded her an Honorary Doctorate. The award is in recognition of “her outstanding contribution to the development of education and artisitic opportunities for the people of Bolton”.

Mrs Kay became a volunteer tutor for the Bolton University of the Third Age after retiring as an English teacher at Bedford High School in Leigh.

She voluntarily tutored students in English, literature, poetry, creative writing and art appreciation.

Betty has continued the good work by starting a new interest group for the visually impaired.
